Jesus Feeds 5000
Would you have willingly given all you had to help Jesus?
Scripture reading: Matt. 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17 John 6:1-14
What comes to mind after reading the above scripture, besides Jesus feeds 5000 plus people? After reading, I thought to myself “Would I have willingly given all I had to help Jesus?”. This question is a good example of how the Holy Spirit can show you something new, after rereading scripture.
The Setting
Jesus leaves with His disciples for a deserted area to get some rest, and they have to cross the Sea of Galilee to reach their destination. A great number of people, 5000 men plus women and children, end up following Jesus to the middle of nowhere. Jesus has compassion for them, so much in fact, that He ends up teaching them about the kingdom of God and healing the sick. Jesus does this until evening. The people have been there all day after making the trip without a gas-powered vehicles (with heat and air conditioning) and fast food drive-throughs, 😊 and now it’s evening.
The Decision
It’s now evening, and Jesus knows that the multitude of people need to eat. The disciples wanted to send the people away to travel to the nearest cities to find food, but Jesus made a better decision! Jesus feeds 5000 plus people with 5 loafs of bread and 2 small fish.
The Question
Where did they get the bread and fish? John 6:9 says it came from a lad, meaning a young kid. If you were tired and hungry, and you still had to journey home that evening, would you have given ALL of your food away? This person (a young kid) gave ALL of his food to Jesus knowing that he still had to return home (and not by car, bus or train) and he still had to eat. He didn’t keep any of it for himself. I’m sure he didn’t have inside knowledge of how much bread and fish he was going to get back to eat.
The Point
Jesus isn’t standing near you, asking to use your bread and fish to further His kingdom. Jesus is in you, asking if He can use YOU to further His kingdom.
Lastly, Jesus didn’t need the lad’s bread and fish to feed 5000 people, He wanted to use it. Jesus doesn’t need you to further His kingdom, He wants to use you!
