STANDING FIRM TO OUR FAITH, WHY AND HOW?
The book of Jude is a great resource to show us how and why we need to be standing firm in our faith. Right now we need this reminder more than ever.
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
JUDE 3-4 NKJV
WHY TO STAND FIRM TO YOUR FAITH?
I believe these two verses were important then, and they are important now!
Jude wrote this book, of the bible, because they needed to be reminded of something very important, and I think we need to be reminded too!
- The importance of standing firm to their faith. Contend earnestly for the faith
Jude wants us to stand firm in our faith! He wants us to have confidence in our faith, to be able to stand up for what we believe in, and not back down or give in when people confront us with false doctrine. - Because ungodly people have quietly sneaked into the church. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, … ungodly men
Jude wants us to know that not everyone who portrays themselves as a Christian, or believer in Christ, truly is. Ungodly people will try to get us to believe they’re a christian. They do this slowly, and quietly and with a motive. - They pretend to have God’s grace upon them, but they deny God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
After they gain our trust and we believe that they’re a christian they slowly show themselves for who they really are. They are unbelievers who are trying to slowly and quietly pull us away from God. They want to pull us away from the faith that Jude is reminding us to earnestly contend for.
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
JUDE 20-21
HOW TO STAND FIRM TO YOUR FAITH?
Now that we have been reminded that we need to be standing firm to our faith, and why, we now need to be reminded how we can do this. God doesn’t want us look like new christians our whole life, He wants to grow and be strong.
- We need to be strong and confident in our faith! building yourselves up on your most holy faith
Jude is telling us that if we are to withstand the teachings of any false doctrine we need to build our faith up. This will help us see false teachings early on. - We can build our faith by praying. praying in the Holy Spirit
Prayer builds our faith because we are fellowshipping with God. Romans 8:26 says that the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf when we pray. - Looking for God’s mercies will build our faith. looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life
When we look at how merciful God is, we can not help but gain confidence in our faith! Every recognized mercy from God is a testimony that we have, that NO ONE can every take away!
And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
JUDE 22-23
CONCLUSION
Yes we need to be aware of false teachers in our churches, and in our christian life. When you read Jude you see more details of what they are like, but you will also see how we are to react. Especially at the end of the chapter. Some we lead to salvation, some we can’t. making a distinction We need to rely on God to direct us to those that can be saved. In doing this we need to have compassion, but others we need to put a little fear in them. have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear Jude leaves us with this, hate the sin, and what the sin does! Do not stop hating the sin and the effects of it so that YOU DO NOT FALL INTO THE FIRE! pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
