On this second of five Christmas Advent Reflections, we will read about Joseph’s reaction to Mary being pregnant, through the Holy Spirit, and his vision of the angel of the Lord.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 1:18-25 

WHO IS JOSEPH BETROTHED TO? Matthew 1:18
Betrothed is comparable to being engaged. The one difference is that when you were betrothed you were considered husband and wife even though you were not married yet.

Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ.

WHAT DID JOSEPH FIND OUT ABOUT HIS BETROTHED WIFE, MARY? Matthew 1:18

It doesn’t say if Joseph was told that her conceptions came from the Holy Spirit. We do know that he found out she was pregnant.

WHAT DID JOESPH PLAN ON DOING AFTER HE FINDS THIS OUT ABOUT MARY? Matthew 1:19

Even though Joseph was a good man, when he found out that Mary was pregnant he planned on divorcing her quietly. He did not want to hurt her, so he was going to do it as discretely as possible.

WHAT DID THE ANGEL OF THE LORD TELL JOSEPH CONCERNING HIS MARRIAGE TO MARY? Matthew 1:20-21

The first thing the angel of the Lord told Joseph, was not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. The second thing he told him was who this unborn child was. This child was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and His name will be Jesus. He will save His people from their sins. His people will be anyone who believes in Him!

WHAT DO VERSES 1:21-23 SAY ABOUT THE UNBORN CHILD THAT MARY IS CARRYING? Matthew 1:21-23

His name will be Jesus, He is coming to save His people from their sins. This is happening to fulfill the prophecies that say a virgin will become pregnant, and have a Son. He will be called Immanuel, God with us. He is telling us that this unborn baby is the Lord!

WHAT WAS JOSEPH’S REACTION AFTER THE ANGEL OF THE LORD SPOKE TO HIM? Matthew 1:24-25

When Joseph woke up he was not afraid to marry Mary. He took Mary as his wife, and named the baby Jesus, as the angel command.
