CHRISTMAS ADVENT 2024, PART 4
On his fourth of five Christmas Advent reflections, we will be reading about the moment the shepherds heard our Savior was born.
You can complete this on your own, or you can read my thoughts under each question.
SCRIPTURE: LUKE 2:8-14
📖Who was working the night shift when Christ was had been born? Vs 2:8
Shepherds that were watching and caring for their flock.
📖What had happened to frighten the shepherds? Vs 2:9
An angel of the Lord appeared to them out of nowhere and the glory of the Lord appeared around the angel. One moment they were tending their flock, and the next they were looking at an angel that had the presence of the Lord with it.
📖Why did the angel tell them they shouldn’t be afraid? Vs 2:10
They are bringing them good news that pertains to everyone! This news is good tidings of great joy, and it’s nothing to be afraid of!
📖What was the good news that the angels were proclaiming to the shepherds? Vs 2:11
The Savior is born! Christ, the LORD was born that day! The Savior was born by a virgin birth in the City of David, according to Scripture!
📖What would be their sign that they had found the Savior? Vs 2:12
The baby, Christ the Lord, would be swaddled in cloth (not clothes) and lying in a manger. This is not a place where a newborn baby would be found. Certainly not where you would look for the Savior of the world either!
📖What happened in Vs 13-14?
The angel of the Lord was not alone. A multitude of heavenly host appeared out of nowhere with the angel of the Lord, and all of them were praising God in front of the shepherds. What a sight it would be, to see heavenly host praising God on earth before men.
A side note: The scripture says heavenly host, it does not say angels. We do not know who these heavenly host were. They could have be more angels, or they could have been a mix of heavenly beings. Scripture doesn’t tell us this specific detail.
📖How would you react if you experienced this? Vs 8-14
I honestly don’t know. I imagine having the same initial reaction of being afraid. Fear, then a sense of calmness and peace because I am guessing I would feel the presence of the Lord. I hope I would do the same as the shepherds and seek out the newborn Savior as soon as the angel of the Lord and the heavenly host depart. I can’t imagine keeping an experience like this to myself!
