CHRISTMAS ADVENT 2024, PART 5

CHRISTMAS ADVENT 2024, PART 5

On this last of five Christmas Advent reflections, we will be reading about the wise men’s experience after the birth of Christ, our Lord and Savior.

You can complete this on your own, or you can read my thoughts under each question.

Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12

📖This passage of scripture focuses on the wise men’s experience after they find out that Jesus has been born. Read the passage slowly, taking note of events that stand out for you. Matthew 2:1-12

1 Now when the birth of Jesus took place in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is the King of the Jews whose birth has now taken place? We have seen his star in the east and have come to give him worship. 3 And when it came to the ears of Herod the king, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And he got together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, questioning them as to where the birth-place of the Christ would be. 5 And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for so it is said in the writings of the prophet, 6 You Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the chiefs of Judah: out of you will come a ruler, who will be the keeper of my people Israel. 7 Then Herod sent for the wise men privately, and put questions to them about what time the star had been seen. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, Go and make certain where the young child is; and when you have seen him, let me have news of it, so that I may come and give him worship. 9 And after hearing the king, they went on their way; and the star which they saw in the east went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the young child was. 10 And when they saw the star they were full of joy. 11 And they came into the house, and saw the young child with Mary, his mother; and falling down on their faces they gave him worship; and from their store they gave him offerings of gold, perfume, and spices. 12 And it was made clear to them by God in a dream that they were not to go back to Herod; so they went into their country by another way.
Matthew 2:1-12 (BBE)

📖At what point in time, in relation to Christ’s birth, does this passage start? Vs.1-2

This takes place AFTER the birth of Christ, after they had seen His star in the east.

📖At what point in time, in relation to Christ’s birth, do the wise men finally meet up with Mary and Jesus, and where do they find them? Is Jesus still in the manger?

We do know from this passage that:
– It is not right after the birth.
– Jesus is not described as a baby, but as a young child.

This exact passage does not say how long after His birth that the wise men found their way to Mary and Jesus. We know through this passage that Jesus was not a newborn baby, but a young child. When they found them Jesus was no longer in the manger, but in a house, and is described as a young child.

📖How does it impact you, knowing that the wise men sought out Jesus well after His birth, to worship Him?

Christmas is one day a year, but we need to worship and seek Him out all year. The wise men didn’t say “We missed the birth of the King. It is too late for us to go and worship Him.” They decided to seek Him out and worship Him, even though He would not be an infant that was just born, when they found Him. Christmas is one day, but we should live like it’s every day.
