HOW TO WRITE A DEVOTIONAL

HOW TO WRITE A DEVOTIONAL

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:16 NKJV

What is a devotional and how to write one!

If I were to ask you to define “devotional”, what would your answer be? Would your answer describe a devotional book that you can buy or would your answer be more descriptive and more personalized? Would you say a devotional is a feminine thing to do or it’s for everyone? In this blog article we will touch on what a devotional is, and how to write your own devotional!

WHAT IS A DEVOTIONAL?

A DEVOTIONAL, IS when you devote your time and mind to God for the sole purpose of growing closer to Him, which will help you to grow spiritually. A devotional is when you commit to devoting one on one time with God.

A DEVOTIONAL, IS NOT simple reading what someone else has written. A devotional is not a bible study done in a group setting (though you can, and should, feel close to God every time you study the bible).

Doing a devotional is your personal one on one time with God. You don’t need to read and meditate on other peoples words to have a true personal devotional with God. Whatever form your devotional looks like, just make sure that you make it personal. Just you and God, one on one!

DO WE NEED DEVOTIONAL TIME WITH GOD? IS IT REALLY IMPORTANT?

YES IT’S IMPORTANT! God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him! If you have a personal relationship with someone, you get together, have conversations, trust them and depend on them. You develop this relationship by spending time together, one on one time, and sometimes in a group setting. Your personal relationship with God is no different! If you want it to grow, you need one on one time, you need to devote time just to God!

ONE ON ONE TIME WITH GOD WILL GROW YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM, ALONG WITH YOUR FAITH AND KNOWLEDGE. THIS WILL HELP YOU, WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST.

Doing your own devotional

In this section I will show you how to do a devotional on your own. Doing one on your own has many benefits, but the most important benefits is that it is personal. It’s your personal thoughts, ideas and conversation with God.

WRITING YOUR DEVOTIONAL IN 7 STEPS

Tell everyone in your house that you can not be disturbed for the next 15 minutes. Get some paper, a journal, or open up a new document on your computer or phone. Then start with step 1, not stopping until you have completed steps 1-7.
The next section has my completed devotional for you to refer to if you need it. Mine is here only to show you that your thoughts don’t have to be long and complicated. It’s not homework, its your one on one time with God!

  1. Pray
  2. Pick a verse or verses.
  3. Read the verse(s) at lease 2x’s
  4. Write out the verse(s)
  5. Write out words, from the verse itself, that stood out to you.
  6. Write out your thoughts about the verse. (This is your personal devotional so don’t limit yourself to cookie cutter thoughts.)
  7. Lastly, write out a prayer based on steps 1-6.

MY PERSONAL DEVOTION:

  1. Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me I have time to devote to You. Help me to see Your will in the verse that I will be focused on in this devotional.
Thank You God, In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.
  2. Hebrews 4:16
  3. (Read it 2x’s)
  4. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
    Hebrews 4:16 NKJV
  5. boldly, Throne of grace, Obtain mercy, Find grace to help, Time of need.
  6. God You don’t want me to just come to you, but You want me to come BOLDLY to You, knowing where You are, on Your throne of grace! I take that as being confident in my approach, in anything that I ask for, and anything that I say. If I am admitting I have sinned, I need to be bold and own up to it and not hide it. If its praising You, I need be confident and excited for Your doings! If I come to You with confidence, boldly, You will bless me with mercy and grace. But, You don’t just give it to me, you will make sure that I have it when I need it most! If I am confident in You I will lean on that and I will not forget about it!
  7. Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word. I need to slow down and focus on it more often, just You and me! Thank You for reminding me to always come to You boldly. So often I come before You with a laid back attitude, You don’t want that to be the norm. So, forgive me for that God, and help me to be bold and confident before You! Thank You for all You give me, including the mercy and grace that I so desperately need to live this life. Help me to keep my faith strong, always living for You!
In Jesus name I pray, AMEN.
