A CHRISTMAS DEVOTIONAL

A CHRISTMAS DEVOTIONAL

A CHRISTIAN CHRISTMAS

No Christian celebrates Christmas exactly the same. Our Christmas traditions and celebrations may be different, but the goal should be the same. That goal should be a focus on Christ. One way we do this is through Christmas traditions.

1 Peter 2:4-10

4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,
“Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”
7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,
“The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone,”
8 and
“A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense.”
They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

1 Peter 2:4-10

“What does this passage have to do with Christmas?”.

For Christians, Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Christ.
We celebrate the birth of Christ because He is the foundation of our faith, our cornerstone, our Chief Cornerstone. Just like it tells us in I Peter 2:6-8! Our faith is fully dependent on Him, and what He has done for us! He deserves to be praised and remembered because of it!

Jesus came to this earth, being born just like us, living in this world and experiencing it first hand, died a painful death, and come back to life, becoming our Chief Cornerstone! He did this for us, when He didn’t have to.

Christ deserves to be remembered and celebrated! So, once a year Christians celebrate His birth, taking the opportunity to follow scripture, I Peter 2:9, “that we may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into marvelous light”.

How can we celebrate Christmas and honor what it’s truly about?

One way is through Christmas traditions. Doing something each year that has a deep significant meaning. A lot of Christmas traditions are based on the Christmas story and God’s love for us, by sending His Son to become the Cornerstone of our faith.
Here are some examples of Christmas traditions that you may currently do:

Christmas tree with white lights and red ornaments.

Gift giving –  Based on the wise men giving gifts to Mary, God giving us the gift of His Son, which leads to the free gift of Salvation.
Christmas Tree – The green symbolizes salvation, branches point to Heaven.
Star on top of the tree – The star that guided the wise men.
Angel on top of the tree – The angel that visited Joseph in a dream, the angel that talked to Mary and the angel that talked to the shepherds in the field keeping watch.
Candlelight/Christmas lights – Represents the light of Christ.
Christmas Cards – Giving cards to family and friends to share the joy of Christmas with them.

Our actions during the Christmas season should come from the heart, help us honor God, and help shine His light for others to see. Think about starting your own traditions this Christmas and throughout the year, that reflects your love for Christ, and what He has done for you.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You so much for the birth of Your Son! Thank You for what that means for this world, and personally in our own lives, these many years later! Help each of us to proclaim Your praises this Christmas season, and all year long! Let us not forget to rely on Jesus as our Chief Cornerstone! Laying it ALL upon Him, He can handle all of it!
Thank You for being OUR God!
